READINESS
Working with groups of students through churches, community organizations, and school systems, our workshops introduce students to the importance of early preparation for the college selection process. Students are engaged in the discussion through group activities and by working with their peers to complete their college planning worksheets. Each student leaves the presentations with the beginnings of their college plan.
Individual educational consultation is offered to students we meet through the readiness workshops or by referral of a teacher, counselor, or community stakeholder. Once accepted, we aid these students by crafting plans that meet their specific educational and personal needs. Our goal is to help them identify those needs and assist them in making informed choices about their college education. When finished, their choices are affordable, practical, and attainable and will increase their chances of graduating successfully.
READING
CREED distributes books to area elementary, middle school, and high school students. We strongly believe that developing a love for reading in a young person is a gateway to building curiosity about pursuing higher education. We are generously supported in our efforts by the national nonprofit First Book, through whom we have purchased over 400 books for the cost of postage (.45-.65) per book.
Undergraduate Mini-Grants, Internships, & Retention Support
Working together with families, we support young people through the important first year of their college education. We answer their questions, help them navigate the maze of their colleges' administration, and, when available, provide $50 - $100 mini-grants for travel home and limited emergency funds. Previously approved funded requests include, but are not limited to, school supplies, bus tickets, and assistance with books. A new pilot program, winter internships with CREED, will introduce undergraduate and graduate students to nonprofit management. Mini grants and internships are dependent on the success of our annual fundraising campaigns.
CREED Data Collection and Analysis Project
Since our founding in 2010, CREED has used surveys to assess student needs and readiness for college. We are in the process of compiling the data and will spend the next years analyzing the information that we have collected. It is our hope to build a profile of our students and to use the data to further understand the needs of our students. We will use this information in grant solicitation and in lobbying efforts with our local, county, and state politicians.

This is the third newsletter produced by CREED and features an advice column by Mr. Vincent Briley, Asst. Dean of Academic Advising and Testing at Scott Community College.
Demarius Newsome, age 22, is the 1st CREED Undergraduate Nonprofit Management Intern. He is currently a third-year student at Hampton University, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology with a minor in Leadership Studies through the Dr. William R. Harvey Leadership Institute. He has a pre-law concentration through the Hampton University pre-law Institute and is matriculating through the Dr. Freddy T. Davy Honors College.
"Our 1st Intern, Demarius Newsome, completed his four projects and is now readying himself to head back to Hampton University. While an intern, Demarius provided CREED with website analysis, built a participant database, did a content analysis of our newsletters, and discovered best practices for small nonprofits relevant to our work with CREED. As a CREED participant and in gratitude for his hard work on his assignments, Mr. Newsome will receive two mini grants that he can use at his discretion to help with his travel costs back to school. Demarius is a junior at Hampton, a member of the marching band, and a stellar student. He is a graduate of Meadville Area High School and the grandson of Rev. Berta Newsome Jones of United Faith Fellowship. He sets a wonderful precedent for CREED students who will follow him in the internship program and is an excellent example for his younger sisters. Join us in thanking Demarius for his contribution to our efforts and for serving as our first intern" (Terrence Mitchell, Facebook Post, 1/4/14).
The Undergraduate Nonprofit Management Internship is a pilot program for which CREED hopes to continue to raise funds to support in future years.
Mr. Newsome is now a graduate of Hampton University and will attend Emory Law School this fall on scholarship.
Demarius has successfully completed his first semester at Emory Law School and, during his first semester, penned a thank you essay for CREED donors, which will be shared in the spring 2016 newsletter.
Demarius is now a practicing lawyer in Atlanta. He is an ardent supporter of CREED, and we look forward to his continued success.
